When a typhoon strikes, |
[00:02.48] |
one of the best places to be is Hong Kong harbour with its sheltered anchorage. |
[00:09.47] |
|
[00:20.01] |
A centre of international trade, |
[00:23.68] |
the city is famous for its jumble of skyscrapers and its bustling commercial center. |
[00:29.10] |
But there's a side to Hong Kong that's less well known. |
[00:35.31] |
Behind the urban sprawl lies a swathe of wetlands which include the Mai Po Nature Reserve. |
[00:50.37] |
Managed principally for the benefit of migrating birds, |
[00:54.11] |
the reserve maintains a series of traditional prawn farms, known as gei wais, |
[01:00.98] |
and their adjoining mangroves and mudflats. |
[01:03.87] |
Every two weeks from November to March, |
[01:10.33] |
one of the gei wais is drained by opening up the sluice gates. |
