Thousands of species have humans to thank for |
| [00:02.88] |
bringing them to islands throughout the Pacific. |
| [00:05.82] |
But there's one animal that has been a valued travelling companion |
| [00:09.36] |
for as long as people have sailed this ocean. |
| [00:11.95] |
Wherever people went, |
| [00:13.23] |
pigs went too. |
| [00:15.29] |
In Vanuatu, |
| [00:16.45] |
1,200 miles north of New Zealand, |
| [00:19.48] |
the people of Tanna Island have gathered for a festival. |
| [00:23.51] |
Like an expensive car in Western culture, |
| [00:26.39] |
here pigs are a symbol of wealth and status. |
| [00:29.88] |
The Toka festival celebrates the end of warfare between rival clans, |
| [00:34.44] |
and pigs are at the centre of it. |
| [00:36.92] |
To attend, each village must bring some to the party, |
| [00:39.99] |
that's a lot of pigs. |
| [00:41.63] |
Some will be butchered for a feast, |
| [00:43.54] |
others given away. |
| [00:44.89] |
But to take one of these pigs home, |
| [00:46.66] |
a family must agree to one day repay the debt |
| [00:50.11] |
and it's these pig debts that help strengthen the bonds |
| [00:52.69] |
between the different villages. |
